Project Info
The new Arts & Media Hub at MiraCosta College is one of a series of master planned improvement projects advancing on the Oceanside campus. The new building contains a large gathering space, new classrooms, computer labs, collaboration spaces, offices, and a gallery. The outdoor spaces encompassing the building thoughtfully balance internal program-specific use with external campus engagement. An entry portal draws one through the breezeway and into the courtyard which functions as a flexible space for events, daily class program use, and circulation. From this courtyard, the building’s architecture and strategically placed landscape planters provide a frame for the the primary pedestrian promenade.
Alternating display nodes are woven into the landscape along the main promenade with an open space and infrastructure provided for temporary or permanent installations, and a sculptural landscape wall borders the western edge of the promenade, providing a blank canvas for rotating student and faculty exhibits with a backdrop of shade canopy trees. A series of playful landscape areas intersect the central gathering space and provide a buffer between seating areas. A built-in seat wall serves as overflow seating for the gallery and defines the core gathering space which is oriented towards a proposed projector wall for film screening and events.
