The Merage Jewish Community Center Early Childhood Preschool Playground project transforms a 30,700-square-foot Early Education Center into a vibrant outdoor learning environment. Designed for children ages 18 months to 5 years, the playground features distinct areas tailored to the developmental needs of each age group. Drawing inspiration from the community’s memorial garden and its signature mosaic art installation—based on the poem “The Butterfly” by Pavel Friedman—the new play space continues the poem motif through the use of vibrant colors, dynamic hardscape and landscape elements, and a strong sense of community. Age-specific play areas reflect the metamorphosis of a butterfly, guiding children through each stage of its life cycle. As a nature play space, the design includes play structures, music exploration, water play, block-building zones, and other opportunities for discovery and imaginative interaction with nature. Additionally, the site incorporates creative materials and art that reference the Jewish faith, reinforcing a sense of belonging and purpose for all who visit.
