Swami’s Beach Access
The design of Swamis Beach Access was site specific to meet individual potentials and constraints. Services provided included complex permit processing (including acquisition of a coastal development permit from the California Coastal Commission), geological analysis of beach and bluff erosion, analysis of potential wave action at the base of the bluff, and design of a wood stairway structure and retaining wall. The design of the stairway required descending the natural bluff for a vertical drop of more than 75 feet. A combination of on grade concrete walkways and landings at the beach were connected between the levels with a wooden stairway system. A unique 45 foot long span, using 4 foot high gluelam beams to bridge over the most sensitive part of the bluff, was specifically developed. The reinforced retaining wall system allowed upper bluff stability without extensive bluff disturbance.
