Imperial Avenue

The Schmidt Design Group, Inc. incorporated public art, decorative paving, and landscape improvements in medians to begin the redevelopment of this commercial corridor on approximately 1 mile of Imperial Avenue in Southeast San Diego. Collaborating with local artist Eddie Edwards, the firm was successful in obtaining approvals for one of the first public art projects in medians within San Diego. The design improvements added unique art panels and colorful landscape planting in the street median to create excitement and movement throughout the site. The panels display artwork that reflects scenes of community participation with a vibrant rainbow backdrop. The first ever Encanto Street Fair occurred at the opening of this streetscape, it is now an annual tradition that is attended by thousands of people.
