Beacon’s Beach

This beach access by the Schmidt Design Group, Inc. requires the design of shoreline access at a very popular beach in Encinitas, California. The site includes an elevation change of eighty-five feet and is located on a 350 foot wide historic landslide. Facilitated by Glen Schmidt, FASLA, substantial public input was gathered through public meetings and workshops. In addition, extensive geotechnical investigations and engineering were also completed in developing a final design for the access. The design includes a shoreline protection wall at the base of the slope that will be colored and textured to simulate the natural bluff face. Slope stabilization is included and an at-grade earthen trail will provide public access to the beach. The existing parking lot has been re-designed and re-treated from the bluff edge. Native vegetation (which will not require permanent irrigation) is included as well.
